In the years that followed, however, QuickTime became the de facto standard for digital videos on the Mac. Even Apple's film trailers were available exclusively in QuickTime format for years.
From QuickTime to MP4
The MP4 format is based directly on Apple's QuickTime container. When the MPEG group was looking for a standard for MPEG-4 video in the early 2000s, it adopted the container structure of QuickTime and developed the MP4 format (MPEG-4 Part 14) from it. Technically, QT and MOV are therefore closely related to MP4. The differences lie mainly in the supported codecs and metadata.
Despite this relationship, MP4 has long since supplanted its ancestors. The decisive turning point came in 2016 when Apple discontinued the QuickTime Player for Windows. Since then, there has been no official way for Windows users to play QT files natively; only alternatives such as VLC are still compatible.
